Cara Long’s work is fueled by an exploration of self-indulgence and obsessive consumption in which the edible, the mechanical, and the utilitarian are united. A skilled ceramicist and pastry chef, Long exploits the sensuality and familiarity of sugar, cake, and porcelain in a new series of edible and interactive works.
In Swallow {Consume. Become Consumed. Repeat}, sweet aromas and creamy façades offer a backdrop of enticement for this installation of objects and edibles. Long invites the viewer to participate in the consumptive act; free to lick, bite, and swallow, the consequence of the viewer’s interaction will lead to the ultimate demise of the work.
Currently an MFA Candidate at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, Long earned a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and has exhibited her works and confections throughout the country.
This exhibition is on view Wednesday-Saturday, 24-27 April, 11am-6pm, with a reception on Friday, 6-8pm during which consumption and destruction of the works will commence. Free and open to the public.
